HIM2 > The Saudi 'Shmagh'
HIM2 > Pristine white mosque against vibrant blue sky in Jeddah.
HIM2 > In Jeddahs city center there remains a small district that contains the only historic buildings left in the city.

In a misguided pursuit of modernity, rather than preserve & renovate, this area has been badly neglected and left to decay. Many of the buildings have been bulldozed to make way for modern buildings.

It is fair to say however that (only) recently have the authorities realised the damage done and the importance of preserving these architectural time-capsules.....consequently they have stopped demolishing them although I saw little sign of renovation.
HIM2 > Mosque, Jeddah.
HIM2 > The intricacy & richness of this mashrabiyya lattice work as well as its relatively good condition, compared to other surrounding houses, suggests this house must have belonged to a wealthier and more prominent family.
HIM2 > Old building in Jeddah with "mashrabiyyas" .... the mashrabiyya is the intricate wooden lattice screens traditionally serving a dual function; breaking the harsh sun rays and also providing inabitants privacy in this conservative culture.

The mashrabiyya here, as on many houses in this district, has been adapted to accommodate ACs!
HIM2 > The Mohammad Farsi mosque located on the corniche, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
HIM2 > Al Diriyyah ... the valley oasis where bedouin nomads originally settled creating the seeds of what was to become the city of Riyadh ... relative to the extremely harsh arid desert surrounding it ... it was lush, verdant, a source of comfort and most of all, supported their survival.

The Diriyyah wall shown is approximately 200 years old.
HIM2 > The colorful & elegant Saudi head-dress worn by men ....

....the cotton red & white chequred head cover is called a shmagh and can come in different colors, the white cap worn underneath is to prevent the shmagh from slipping and is called a tagiyyah....the ringed black wreath, called igal, is put on top to secure both onto the head.
