Known locally as the *Bride of the Red Sea*..this cosmopolitan port city has for centuries played host & gateway to millions of travellers seeking access to Islam's two holiest shrines in Makkah & Madinah. Jeddah is a true melting pot for people from different cultures and is probably the liveliest most dynamic city in Saudi Arabia today.

The moon in its orbit around the earth! :-)

Planet earth sculpture located on "planet earth" roundabout, Jeddah.
A beautiful sculpture located on "planet earth" roundabout in Jeddah caught at sunrise with crescent moon in the distance.
Minarets & dome on a mosque on Jeddah's corniche.
A 'Friday' Mosque located on Jeddah's Corniche along the Red Sea coast.
In Jeddahs city center there remains a small district that contains the only historic buildings left in the city.

In a misguided pursuit of modernity, rather than preserve & renovate, this area has been badly neglected and left to decay. Many of the buildings have been bulldozed to make way for modern buildings.

It is fair to say however that (only) recently have the authorities realised the damage done and the importance of preserving these architectural time-capsules.....consequently they have stopped demolishing them although I saw little sign of renovation.
This type of traditional Jeddah building with thick solid mud-brick walls and *mashrabiyya* wood screens (covering all windows) effectively responded to Jeddah's hot climate and privacy from neigbours.

The arched parapet at the top surrounds the roof deck for cooler outdoor living during summer evenings (before the onset of AC).
Pristine white mosque against vibrant blue sky in Jeddah.
Commissioned by the ex mayor of Jeddah, Mohammad Farsi, this elegant and understated sculpture is one of three sculpted by the reknowned British artist Henry Moore found in Jeddah along the corniche. Of the three this is by far my favourite.

The photo immediately after this shows Moore's signature at the base of this sculpture.....The 2 photos following that show the other 2 Moores located in Jeddah (also on the corniche).
